Memento Mori - Mystery of Love
Lyrics from Sufjan Steven’s beautiful song ‘Mystery of Love’.
Explore my vibrant and eclectic series, "Funeral Songs," where each piece features a striking memento mori skull. These artworks are inspired by my personal reflection on mortality—perhaps influenced by a deep-rooted Irish tradition of contemplating death, or maybe it's my own ongoing existential musings. Selecting the perfect song for a funeral is something I've often discussed, and this series captures that conversation.
The skulls are accompanied by lyrics from an eclectic mix of songs, ranging from The Smiths and David Essex to Monty Python, offering a soundtrack filled with love, humour, and sentiment as the final curtain falls. Interestingly, whenever I hear the songs from my parents' funerals, I find a strange sense of comfort and strength.
Each piece in this series is a 20 x 20 cm mixed-media painting on canvas board, featuring a joyous riot of spontaneous colour. The combination of collage, acrylic, spray paint, and paint pens creates a celebration of life with a touch of irreverence towards the inevitable. These paintings are more than just art—they're an interactive project. I invite you to contribute your own funeral song suggestions, which I'll add to my growing Spotify playlist.
Available for £45 each, these little square canvas boards are a vibrant, unique way to celebrate life and confront death with a smile.
